So I wanted to use the internal mic on a Dell D620 under Ubuntustudio 8.10 so I could record intros to the songs I put up to play on kaoradio but it refused to record.
I remember having trouble with the internal mic on earlier ubuntu versions too...but somehow I made it work and as it usually happens under linux whatever works now there is big chance that will break after an upgrade or something... and most probably you have not made a note of what you did to make things work.

Anyway, searching around the net I found that this is a common problem for linux users with this laptop model. Among kernel and alsa recomplile solutions I found a simpler one that works....for the moment!!

Edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and add.... options snd-hda-intel model=ref
(D620 uses a Sigmatel 9200 audio interface which uses the Intel HDA driver)
Restart alsa afterwards.... /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart

Interestingly enough, after this change I can now record using the internal mic...but only using OSS..... Pulse and Alsa still refuse to use it...

linux audio sucks, but maybe in a couple of years it will find the way.
